The implementation of the 100,000 Homes project will allow our agency to serve the most vulnerable of clients - the chronically homeless - by providing individualized, permanent housing.
What makes this project so exciting and interesting is the opportunity we have as an agency to take the extra time to sit down as a team, which includes the individual, to take a hands-on approach in deciding what type of housing situation may work best. The difference with this project and our other rental voucher programs is that the Housing Specialist is present at the initial meeting and conducts the intake after the team works together to devise an individualized Housing Plan. This gives us a chance to develop a relationship with the tenant, discuss their housing history and any barriers we may be able to help remove, so that the tenancy can be a success.
After the housing plan is formed, the type of housing, the area the tenant may do best in, and other relevant factors are discussed and a rental unit that is safe and stable is identified. Once the inspection is completed and the tenant moves in, the Housing Specialist will continue to visit the client on a regular basis in order to identify any areas where the tenant may need assistance; for example, education on basic life skills or assistance with housekeeping tips, empowering clients to have a successful housing experience. In addition, the team will continue to meet on a regular basis to discuss the tenant's progress and to adjust the housing plan as needed.
All of these steps, along with a team to support the tenant, can help move the individual towards self-sufficiency where they can lead a stable life with dignity.
